Gary Speed
Today is a great loss to football. Gary was a fantastic player and manager and ended up being a true Icon to Wales. Gary started his career in a Leeds united shirt where over his 248 caps he achieved 40 goals and was really considered a legend after 8 glorious years at Leeds. Making his debut when he was aged 19. He went on to play a key role as they won the Football League First Division championship title in 1992 as part of a midfield that also comprised Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister and David Batty.
Gary then moved to Everton where he spent 2 years and scored 15 goals in 54 appearances. He was installed as captain of the club by then manager Howard Kendall prior to the 1997–98 FA Premier League season. Everton was his boyhood club.
After leaving in controversial circumstances at Everton Gary signed for Newcastle Speed featured in the club's FA Cup Final defeats by Arsenal in 1998 and by Manchester United in 1999.
Newcastle's manager, Sir Bobby Robson, was sorry to see Speed leave the club, and acknowledged that he would do very well for Bolton Wanderers. Which he did.
As a manager Gary Speed started off being a tough task with being manager of Sheffield United for whom was the last team he played for. He was offered a 3 year managerial contract after. On 11 December 2010, Speed was linked with the vacant Wales manager job. He snapped at the opportunity and quickly got Wales to 42Nd in the FIFA World Rankings and only just missed out on qualification for EURO 2012. Gary was considered to be one of Wales brightest prospects in football and didn't ever disappoint.
